| howdy folks !
my 2004 700 sportsman quits when i turn on my headlights .
when i turn on headlights it seems within a couple of minutes the bike will shutdown and no power to lights and bike wont start but the fan will keep running with key in the on position.
but when i turn key off and wait for a few minutes it will start and keep running as long as i keep lights off.
Anyone have any ideas?
thanks!! | | | | Aug 13th, 06, 11:19 PM | | Beer Wagon Driver STAFF Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: DFW, Tx.

| Has to be electrical. That's wierd..
Is this 700 Fuel Injected?
What kind of condition is your battery in?
Is your alternator charging the battery? Machine seem to have any trouble starting?
Just fishing for clues.

| get you an electrical tester and test the battery to see how much voltage you are getting
1) check battery with bike off
2) check with bike on
3) check with bike on and then get someone to turn on the lights at the same time, if you are dropping below about 8 volts when you turn the light on then theres the problem.
i had a problem similar to that the other day on my boat, the motor wouldnt even turn on but the bilge pump would run fine. i checked the battery idle and had 10 volts.... you would think thats enough to crank it but i really didnt have ten volts. when i put the strain of the motor trying to crank on it it would pull down to about 2 volts! i just swapped batterys and everything worked great! | | | | Aug 14th, 06, 02:55 PM | | Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: georgia

| i guess what im trying to tell you is the lights coming on may be just enough to drain the battery. and most likely the alternator is not up to snuff either cause it should hold the load without the battery! | | | | Aug 14th, 06, 08:45 PM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Florida

| Sounds about like what I had in mind, electrical system weakened to the point that any draw would deny the motor the needed power to run.
