After many months of anticipation and effort, a grand opening celebration for the Georgetown ATV Trail was held June 2 at the trail bridge which crosses Skinner Creek. The brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. was preceded by a fund-raising breakfast sponsored by the Southern Price County ATV Club at Happy Daze Restaurant and Bar.
Following the ride to the parking lot on White Birch Lane at the end of the trail, club members provided brats and beverages for a free-will donation.
According to Eric Holm, Price County Forestry and Parks assistant administrator and ATV coordinator, in April 2004, the country forestry department applied for a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) grant for a motorized outdoor recreation trail. After completing the work required to obtain the required permits, the county was awarded $271,135 by the DNR for trail development.
“The money for this grant was funded by ATV registration and gas taxes and was to cover the cost of bulldozing, gravel, culverts, a bridge over Skinner Creek, the boardwalks over wetland areas, signs and posts, Holm said.
Construction of the trail began in April 2006 with several area contractors involved in the project. The major work was completed last fall when the bridge was put in place and gravel applied to the trail.
“We are pleased with the work that has been done in Georgetown and hope to extend the county’s ATV trail system into other areas as well,” Holm said.
