A campground which caters mainly to ATV users, the first of its kind in Oneida County, will open in the town of Enterprise this summer.

At May's meeting of the Oneida County Board of Supervisors, ordinance language which outlined rules for the facility rubbed some supervisors the wrong way and they sent the ordinance back to the committee asking them to condense and simplify the regulations. (Click here for the full ordinance.)

County forest director John Bilogan told supervisors at the June 17 regular board meeting that the committee had "tweaked it and reduced it a little bit" and were asking the full board to approve the ordinance so that the campground could open during the good weather. A group of citizens representing ATV riders in the county were also in attendance.

Supervisors Jack Martinson and Frank Greb were still not satisfied with language disallowing possession of firearms within the facility. Both thought that the word "firearms" should be removed from the ordinance.

Greb also was concerned about whether or not someone could have fireworks on the property. "If I buy some fireworks and they are in my trunk, are they illegal if I pull into the campground," he asked. "I think the word 'possess' should come out," he said.

Other supervisors, including Ted Cushing and David O'Melia, suggested other changes but were cut short when members of the forestry, land and outdoor recreation committee spoke, one by one, in support of the new ordinance.

Supervisor Denny Thompson reminded the board that without an ordinance, the campground could not open and yet, the camping season had already started. "We've had requests to open this up for the season," he said.

Supervisor Gary Baier added that amendments to the ordinance could be implemented at a later date once passed and in effect. Committee chairman Wilbur Petrosky said that he agreed with Baier, and suggested that comments be called into the forestry office.

Supervisor Patricia Peters addressed how the new campground had been funded. "I don't know if you know this, maybe you do: $120,000 came from the ATV club to build this. The county only paid $5,000," she said.

When the vote finally came, there was unanimous support to approve the new ordinance. The group of ATV supporters left the council chambers immediately after that, apparently satisfied that they would soon be able to use the new facility.
