I have 3 Hondas. A 2006 rancher, a 2007 recon, and a 2006 VTX. I think it is so funny how there is so many Harley fans, and those things are so outdated it isnt funny. Then they call a honda 4 wheeler outdated. I agree that Honda could do some updating. I have not seen a honda side by side yet. Then again you have Can Am, so over priced I dont know why anyone would want one.
Polaris, people sure knock them, but wonder where Yamaha got there idea for their 4 wheel drive system and their trans. system on the grizzly. If it had not been for Polaris coming out with the first auto. trans., everyone would still be shifting, even the great Yamaha riders.

Not to argue... but this comment leaves me a bit confused.
As for the idea of 4wd.. it was around in automobiles (and farm equipment) long before Polaris was making ATV's... long before Polaris was even a company to be truthful. It was only a matter of time before this system was modified and integrated into ATV's.
As for the Grizzly Transmission, it is true Polaris did heavily influence this design.. I believe the belt drive automatic trans ATV was originated by Polaris.... but whether they perfected it or not is an entirely different subject which I refuse to debate.

This one gave me a good chuckle... no pun intended.
Automobiles were driving around with automatic transmissions in the 1950s... the sophisticated hydraulic systems that make up the Hondamatic transmission in the Rubicon and Rancher AT have very little in common with the Polaris trans system... and the Torque Converter system in the Rincon shares absolutely nothing with it as far as I can tell. ("Look ma..... no belt")
Every ATV manufacturer has contributed innovations and technological upgrades that have slowly found themselves on nearly every ATV built today....
But to say that Polaris saved us from shifting gears for all eternity is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.
Once again... don't mean to argue... just making a couple of observations.
Almost forgot this was in the Honda forum for a few minutes there... sorry fellas.
Ccrane.. I am sorry to be the one to have to site and explain it to you but I will. The part were I was talking about the 4 wheel drive ment, Polaris was the first to come out with the 4 wheel drive system (on an atv) where it electricly locks both front hubs and that gives you 4 wheel drive. In other words they dont use a transfer case or anything in the trans to go from 2 to 4 wheel drive. Since polaris came out with this system, yamaha has used it on the grizzly, and maybe others, and suzuki has used it on the king quad. I hope this clears this subject up for you.

While it's true I'm not a mechanic... nor have I ever owned a Polaris.... I have never seen an atv with locking hubs. (except for the OLD original Polaris 4wd's which used locking hubs that failed to engage quite frequently)
The engage/disengage mechanism on every Honda, Kawasaki, and Yamaha I've ever owned was inside the front differential.... not at the hubs.

The magnetic engagement system on current polaris models is fairly unique as far as I know... most others use a servo to engage/disengage.
(for proof engage or disengage the grizz... if you listen carefully you'll hear it)
Thanks for the education though.
Let's try to get the topic back onto Honda's shall we?
Thanks Chuck, now back to Honda. I received my Viper winch last night, got it mounted and tested. Just need to get all the wires properly run and the contactor mounted.
LOL... oh boy... next thing ya know... he'll have 23 inches of ground clearance.
LOOK OUT SCRIBNER!!!!
LOL!
Glad to hear ya got it in the works... they're a life-saver.
and watch out for those cable burrs! OUCH!
Nate already found one, we were winding it the first time and he was thinking it's a brand new cable and so shouldn't have any burrs, ripped his finger pretty good.
Now for that lift kit and new tires, ahh some day soon. Except that damn thing has 11" rims in the back, hard to find good tires with having to buy 12" rims which just are not in the budget right now.
Check out your local dealership... sometimes idiots buy a quad with aftermarket wheels/tires on em and never even ask for the factory tires... then the dealership sells em later.

You pretty much nailed it. The only complaint with the Rincon is power. I do know that my lack of power keeps me from breaking stuff. I'll try any hole. Even more so if someone else didn't make it. I primarily use mine in the mud but I wouldn't call Rincons mud machienes.
well i keep mine in the mud half the time the other half its on the trails to the mud.i have 27 inch vampires and have had no trouble with the horsepower havent been in a spot yet it wouldnt turn em
I own 2 a 2005 Foreman 500 4x4 es and a 400 Rancher AT. I love mine and my wife loves hers. I would love to have a Can-am, maybe someday but I will always have my honda so I will always have something to ride.
I recently got a 2007 Rancher TRX420FM and love it.
It is pretty much stock for now but I have a Viper3000 to put on and have parts for a dual 12v outlet coming.
Anybody got any pictures or tips on installing a Viper winch on a rancher?
Yeah send it back and buy a Venom or Extreme. I own the viper and so far everytime I have tried to use it the cable wound up around the outside of the spool. I have since added the synthetic winch line but haven't had a chance to try it. It looks like that may fix it. My first pull the freespool knob spun off, useless the rest of the day couldn't reel in. Second pull on next trip out the line wrapped around the outside of the spool, worthless the rest of the day.
As for tips, it's really easy to install, you may want to think about putting the electical contactor inside the rear cargo box to keep it dry. Or as I did put it on the outside and then cover it with the spray on electrical tape.
I don't understand why everyone has a problem with Honda's.I have a 05 rincon 650,I've had to pull plenty of the other brands out of the mud.My rincon will go anywhere anyone else can go with the same mods.I have no problem with the other brands if its yours and you like it thats all that matters.I'm not trying to start a fuss, please don't get mad with me.Ridding atvs is all about having fun and helping whoever you can if needed.
I own a 04 Recon and have had no problems. I will admit I have been stuck with the best of them but I'm not scared to get muddy. The fun part is getting unstuck and to go through the same hole more than once tring to figure out how to get out of it and most of the time it works.
I have owned many Honda's in my life and never had any major problems out of them. Honda is number 1 in my books.
And so it starts, when I got my Rancher AT 9 months ago I thought it was all I would ever need just the way it was. Now my frineds warned me it was only time and I said no way it's just fine the way it is.
WELLLLLL it now has a Viper 3000 winch (which works much better with rope instead of cable), next was the 25" mudlite AT's. Well that was good enough for then but how long did that last? Not long I just finished up my snorkel and now have 26" Mudbugs and rims on order. But I swear that's the last of it. (Yeah right) ROTFLMAO
