need help with software

Good Morning all. Guess this is one place where i can spill the beans about my daughters Christmas present. hehe We are giving her our old computer all fixed up ofcourse. She will be able to surf the net now. But I need advice on parental control software. The fellow at circut city didnt know squat about protecting children on line. How does it work and can any one reccomend a good software to put on her puter. Thanks
