Juniper Group Off Road Vehicle Goals
Forest Hillside ORV Trials
photo by Larry PenningtonUnmanaged and improperly managed motorized recreation on our National Forests and desert areas is a serious and intensifying threat to the health of the Central and Eastern Oregon Forests and High Desert areas. Such use increasingly conflicts with quiet-use recreationists such as hunters, anglers, hikers, kayakers, rafters, and backpackers. Each year, national forests and grasslands get hundreds of miles of unauthorized roads and trails due to repeated cross-country use, resulting in escalating erosion, water degradation, and habitat destruction. At the same time, Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service resources to manage and police ORV use and abuse is dramatically declining or non-existent.
The Juniper Group works to limit the environmental damage of ORV use by:
- frequent volunteer documentation of ORV damage through photo documentation on field trips to areas not approved for ORV use
- participating in Forest Service and BLM workshops and field trips designed to provide community input on ORV use areas
- providing input on draft Travel Management Plans for each forest and BLM district
- working with local residents impacted by ORV use through the establishment of "Friends of _____" groups that can provide a local voice using Sierra Club resources
For more information about ongoing ORV actions, see our
Off Road Vehicle page in the Take Action section, as well as each Forest and BLM area page under
Federal Areas Issues action pages.
