Polk County Fair with Supercross Motocross Style Racing- July 11-15, 2007 (Minnesota)
The Polk County Fair is celebrating "107 years of family fun" with five festive days filled with many opportunities for entertainment and other things associated with a carnival. Gate admission is free. All events will be held at the Fertile Fairgrounds unless otherwise stated.
The 2007 Polk County Fair will begin with a 'Sneak A Peek' Day on Wednesday, July 11, with Open Class Exhibits available for viewing the next day. The fair will conclude with a Fireworks show on Sunday, July 15.
Murphy Brothers Exposition will once again provide wide array of rides. Ticket options include a Daily Unlimited Ride Pass (unlimited ride for one day, $15 in advance) and the Mega Ride Pass (unlimited rides for all five days, $35 in advance.) Advance ride tickets are available at participating businesses until 5 p.m. July 11. In Crookston, these include the Chamber of Commerce, D&D's Thomforde Garden Center, Eagle Drug and Hugo's.
On three big days - Friday, Saturday and Sunday - World Record Holder D avid "Cannon Ball" Smith Sr. will shoot out of a cannon. See him fly at 3, 6 and 9 p.m. those days. His son, David Smith Jr., performed similar feats at the 2004 fair.
A petting zoo, pony rides and other animal exhibits will be available for the animal lovers. 4-H exhibits of all kinds will display the talents of Polk County youth. Other exhibits include commercial and organizations.
Senior Citizen Day
Everyone age 55 and over is invited to attend Senior Citizens Day at the Polk County Fair Friday. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. with the program beginning at 10 a.m. Polk County Outstanding Senior Citizens Norma Erickson of Fertile and Richard Osmundson of East Grand Forks will be recognized. Winners of the sixth-grade essay contest, Sami Irving of East Grand Forks and Cody Benson of Fertile, will read their 300-word essays about their grandparents and other senior citizens in their lives.
Other activities for seniors include prizes, bingo, entertainment and lunch. The Polk County Committee on Aging sponsors the event.
For those needing a ride, T.H.E. Bus will leave from the Crookston Golden Link at 9 a.m. A fee of $5 is charged for the ride, payable on the day of the event.
Chocolate Bake-Off
The Chocolate Bake-Off contest, sponsored by Al & Laura's Foods of Fertile, is accepting entries. Entries must be submitted by 7 p.m. Wednesday in the open class foods building. Local community members will be judging the entries. Taste testing of these chocolate creations will be open to the public following the judging at 7:30 p.m. at the Free Stage area on the fairgrounds. This competition is open to everyone.
The adult entries must consist of an entire dessert baked from scratch using at least 1/4 cup of any form of chocolate, such as chips, syrup, powder etc., as long it is real chocolate.
Youth, ages 8 to 18, can enter a plate of 6 cookies, brownies or bars made from scratch with at least 1/4 cup of real chocolate also.
All entries must be submitted with a complete recipe. Name and address should be printed on the back of the recipe card.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three place winners in both adult and youth groups. Adult prizes are: 1st place $25, 2nd place $20 and 3rd place $15. Youth prizes are: 1st place $20, 2nd place $15 and 3rd place $10.

Demo derbies, races
Demo derbies will take place Thursday and Friday evenings at the grandstand, a change from previous years.
Thursday night at 7 p.m., see the Pickup, Compact & "Anything Goes" Demo Derby. New this year will be "Anything Goes." This class will include 1/2 T, 3/4 T, 2 door dually pickups, Blazers, Suburbans, Jeeps and any other vehicle that don't fit in the regular demo classes. Classes include 50, 60, 80, 125, 250/open, ATV1, ATV2 125 Pro, 250/Open Pro, ATV Pro. See Peter and Paul Wendinger Polka Band on Sunday at 6 p.m. They compliment their band with a fine variety of musical talents from around the area with the brass section and round out the rhythm section with a youthful and upbeat style. The many musicians they have employed throughout the years have turned into longtime friends and have enjoyed both their families.

And just when you think you can't laugh any longer, their beautiful blend of two-part harmony brings a smile of sweet moose-ic to your ears. It's a custom crafted show with plenty of audience interaction...so get ready to loosen up, lighten up and LAUGH!
Jeff Smith is an experienced professional elementary educator who has developed eye-popping presentations that features our most maligned and misunderstood creatures - snakes, lizards, spiders, giant insects, and hairless rats. View his amazing "Scales, Tails and Spineless Wonders" Friday at 4:15 and 6 p.m. The audience will learn how animals we love to hate are beneficial to our world and how we are actually dependent upon the contributions of many of these creepy critters that slither, crawl, scoot, and squirm through our most primitive fears and nightmares. All program animals are clean and tame. At the end of each presentation is a session for holding and touching specific program animals. Beyond entertainment, respect and understanding all life forms are the primary goals of the program.
The seven-piece M & D Band from the Crookston area will perform Saturday from 8 p.m. to close. The band plays to a wide variety of age groups. Their music ranges from classic country to classic rock including songs of Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and more.
Battle of the Bands will be Thursday evening, beginning at 6 p.m., with $600 in cash prizes going to the top three bands. There is a limit of six bands, call 218-945-67-8 for more information.
Worship Service
An ecumenical worship service will be held on Sunday at 10 a.m. in the grandstand. Little Norway Lutheran Church, Maple Bay Free Lutheran Church, Rindal Lutheran Parish, St. Joseph's Catholic Church and United in Christ Lutheran Parish sponsor this service. Everyone is welcome to worship at the fair.
Kid's Bike Drawing
One girl's and one boy's bike will be given away daily at 4 p.m. in the grandstand, sponsored by area businesses. Anyone age 12 and under is eligible. Tickets are available at the grandstand prior to the drawing. You must be present to win.
