Has anyone who owns a rhino purchased ramps to haul in a full size eight foot box truck? If so, any helpful hints? I'd like to not have to rely on my small trailer if I can help it.

Thanks,

Doogie

After much thought and time, I finally sealed the deal on getting rid of the 500 sportsman and picked up a 07 sport Rhino. Sure is a whole different ride. Can't wait to get it out and see what it will do. Of course now looking at all the pics, I am sure that more money will pour into it to increase the fun factor.

Congrats!

When did you get it? And when are you gonna take it out for that maiden voyage to see if it can handle the waves of the ocean (per say)?

Wow, thanks for all the support. I got it Monday, today is "install the winch day". I have been researching ramps for loading into the truck, and after seeing it come down on a 1500lb rated set of ramps, no way! One of my friends that owns a construction company gave me a set of 8ft aluminum scafold (sp?), that should do the trick.

It's funny though, some neighbors have commented on it like it was just another golf cart for the retirement home. I think its great that they don't get it. Although my German Shepherd hasn't really figured it out as she is used to the sportsman. "Am I suppose to ride in the back or shotgun? I told her that she would have to figure that out with the significant other.

Thanks for the enthusisam! Gotta get crackin' on the winch and see how it fits in the dually.

Anybody got any thoughts on location of remote plug in for winch? I was thinking in front of box behind the B pillar/ roll bar.

Also, anyone got any info on half winshield or full? Gonna have to get those doors, thinking about making my own aluminum ones, custom with door pockets, beverage holders, etc.

Next week looks like it might see the northern Minnesota woods/ trails.

Good luck on the getting it to fit in the truck thing....

I have a chassis-cab with a 9ft. flat bed.... and the blasted thing BARELY fits in it!!!

I'm not comfortable at all with ATV tires riding on tail-gates... and a 1200 lb. machine is certainly no exception to that rule.

Even with my 9ft. flatbed, the ride home from the dealership is likely the only one it will make in the truck. These things are way too big and heavy for most ramps on the market, and too long & top-heavy for most pickups.

I haul mine on my gooseneck flatbed (which has 3" C-channel ramps 8ft. long - you could drive an 18-wheeler up em)

Mine will be on a trailer, too big of an investment to risk to the "tiny" cables that support the tail-gate while in the down position.

Enjoy the new Rhino... we LOVE ours!!!

After loading it up, your correct. It does fit and does not rest on the tailgate. Although I have a small trailer for longer trips and also a 44ft bigfoot pace gooseneck which supports my sportscar racing. I'll save that for the race track and longer trips. I built some risers between the wheel wells to put it up there and that works pretty well. All this is because I store trailers at a differnet location than my residence. Soon as I get the 10+ acres I am shopping for the problem will go away. Besides the Rhino and gear keeps the overload springs just on their perches taking away the banging my sportsman provided.

Hoping to get out soon,

thanks everyone for the support!

Doogie,
Did you get your winch installed and what kind did you decide to buy?

Sounds like you know exactly what you're doing and you're going to be good to go Now the only question is, when are you going

Can't wait to hear how you like that maiden voyage!

AND sportscar racing on top of ATV'ing.............I'm jealous, you definitely know how to do all the finer things in life

To answer your ? Muddin Coastie, bought a viper 4000 winch, interesting though the mount did not work with the sport model (figure the bumper is a bit closer) shimmed it up 5/8ths, works just fine.

Ccrane, I picked up a set of 8ft. aluminum scafolds, they are real slick. Of course their heavier, but manageable. The riser part was easy as the gooseneck plate is there to clamp it between the wheel wells.

Now, the hard part is to get the girlfriend to understand that the first outing needs to be in the mud, so I'll have to take my contractor friend. (Yeah, that's going well). Either way I expect to either tear up that cheap winch or state it was a wise way to go.

Mountin' the wink mirror and freshly machined skid plates tonight,

Curious to see how that viper 4000 winch works out for you. Let us know how it performs when you get it out there and start using it a few times.

Just a suggestion -

Add a chain & lock to your list of things to take each trip...

You might be surprised how quickly those might disappear!

Sounds like you've got it planned!

Great question, I got mine from a friend. He said that they cost him new 80 bucks each. If I find a site for them, I'll pass it along. And with them being 18-20 inches wide, many other uses.

Ccrane, thanks for the reminder, I am used to my enclosed trailer. Also have to drill holes in the ramps as I am sure they could easily grow legs and walk away.

If I hadn't signed up on this site, I wouldn't have as much energy to rid the rhino of that new atv smell.

you guys are bad, keep up the great energy on here!

Well, I finally got the Rhino out into the wild, hit the Soo Line trail in Central Minnesota. I took my CAD designer with to see how the rhino handles with two guys and some gear. Because the Red Top trail wasn't open yet (it opens 5/15/07). We got off the beaten path and handled some pretty muddy areas. Got stuck deep on one side (4-5 inches above the floorboard) and we both got ready to try out the winch, but one last attempt it pulled out. We both were quite amazed. After seeing all the things that people do to these things, I figured the stock tires would just lie down and bury themselves. For a all around tire, pretty good.

MudTramp---, the maiden voyage is in the books, now this weekend should be wild when the mud hole opens up, then I'll get to see the serious guys gettin' deep.

Ccrane, did your exhaust turn blue after the first outing? I had the air box off and started it and the exhaust turned red when warming up, no problems once everything was hooked up. Any thoughts?

Don't want to burn down that sweet 5 valve motor just yet.

Happy muddin' tomorrow we prep and pressure wash for the weekend.

Yup. Even though I have the 450 S.E., the header pipe and all turned steel blue... still is actually

Hmmm... many of the newer ATV motors turn the header and exhaust pipes red until they get broken in... I wouldn't worry too much about it.. also allowing the engine intake that much free access to air might have contributed (all that air it's not used to being able to pull in due to filters and airbox restrictions...) might make the fuel burn a lil hotter.

LOL... should be fine... I'd watch it closely to make sure the cooling fan is coming on... keep an eye on your idiot lights and coolant levels.

These things are hot-blooded by their very nature having the motor so enclosed.

Enjoy it and let us know what your first mods are.... LOL

I figured it was hot blooded, but then my version of hot blooded is warped a bit. My race motors turn 10,000 rpm between shifts and exhaust temps run 1450 degrees. That would be a fully bridgeported rotary motor of 1146cc's and 300 hp.

I figured the blue is because it is stainless and the box does a great job of keeping all that heat from escaping.

Thanks for all the support, I am confident that this site is responsible for less productivity around the house and more work on play.

one has to play. Happiness is hauling all that mud home.

Sounds like I'm speakin to a pro! I just gave the engineers at Yamaha credit for engineering the Rhino's exhaust SO well that when it was broken in that it would match the color of my fenders!

Ccrane,

Yes, that blue does look like it would match well with your SE. I see that you have a full windshield, how do you like it?

Anyone happen to have a contact at Yamaha for a CAD drawing for the rhino? I am developing some after market stuff for mine, and when we get several of the components back from the machine shop for testing, I'd like to post them to see if there is some interest or feedback (positive or negative).

I have already really liked the adjustable shocks for different settings. Of course I'd want to have them cockpit adjustable.

Me a Pro? Naw, just like to play hard, My idea of a great weekend is when you have to go back to work on Monday just to rest (or Tuesday if planned in advanced). Besides Pros get paid and don't spend much time tinkering to build a better mouse trap.

I checked that air filter, rather crude by design. Anyone have any experience with a "better one"?

I went the "cheap" route. I went to Lowes and purchased 1/4" thick plexy-glass, aluminum trim meant for 1/4" ply-wood, and black 3/8" thick zip-ties to secure it with. (I got two pieces of plexy glass *an extra in case I broke one*, a dozen zip ties, and 4 strips of alum. trim) for less than a fourth of the cost of the cheapest and simplest of windshields available for the Rhino on the web.

So far I like it... but only ridden it in cooler temps. In warmer times of year the zip ties may get cut and the windshield stored away (it does create an insane amount of dust and debris inside the cab). But on the flip-side it's a VERY nice addition in the winter to keep that chilled air off of ya.

Be sure to let me know the link to see these... I've had a few ideas myself... but nothing I really thought would go over for anybody other than myself (I have unique - or "insane" tastes as some would call them)

Eh... I was just yankin yer chain. This is my "therapy" as my family calls it... I get out there and I'm a completely different person. In the line of work I'm in, without this outlet I'd certainly already have been institutionalized.

If I could find a way to get paid to customize folks' bikes for em..... I'd quit tomorrow!!!!

I agree whole heartedly, After making the decision to not race this year, I am finding my energy is being put to developing components for the rhino. Of course I have learned to leave some things alone (like the engine). I coud see a sequential six speed v-4 bike motor tucking underneath that plastic cover. But then I'd be better off building a whole tube frame off road machine and hide it underneath the Rhino body work. You know, go down to Robby Gordon's off road shop and get some ideas. (oh yeah, back to reality, I already have a wretched excess sport). Oh, yeah Pros get paid to play.

Besides, none of us want to spend time customizing others bikes so they can have fun, that turns into work.

I think that it is really rewarding to take a chunk of aluminum, steel, carbon fiber, etc and make it into something that actually does something. OF course, the angony of going through several prototypes is an excercise in understanding why there is crown royal or whatever your poison is.

He who dies with the most toys wins,

It wont be long and rhino owners will be pushing them off in the nearest pond/lake and buying a razor. I do believe that most people will feel that the rhino is junk after a few razors blow by them or out mud them!
