| Maxxis Bighorns or Duro Power Grips I was pretty much decided on Maxxis Bighorns for my 450 Grizzly. But with only 450cc, weight is a concern. The Bighorn price is fairly high, but not as big of a concern. Then I found these Duro Power Grips for sale on Rocky Mountain ATV. They are radial and look a lot like Bighorns (except that they have a more consistent tread pattern for both left and right side) and they are about 15+ lbs lighter for a set of four. They only come in the size I will buy, so that is not a problem. Plus, they are about $20/tire cheaper. Does anyone know someting about these tires? Bighorns have great tread life and you actually get a slightly larger than 25" diameter with the bighorns, which I like. Any experiences with the Duro Power Grips out there? Anyone know the tread depth on the Power Grips?
As an aside, my 450 Grizz wants 6+1 offset on wheels to replace stock. I am thinking 5+2 would be okay. Any thoughts on this? | | | | Dec 5th, 07, 10:23 AM | | Trail Junkie Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Scott Depot, West Virginia

| I have a set coming to the house any day now. Ordered the 25/10/12's for all 4 corners of my Rhino, along with a set of Douglas Rattlesnake wheels. I went with a 4.0+3.0 offset, instead of the 5.0+2.0 that is standard, to get just a bit wider for more stability. I'll let you know more about the Duro's after I get them on the Rhino. | | | | Dec 5th, 07, 11:21 PM | | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2007

| You kind o get what you pay for. I do know from experiance the BH's will last longer. the Duro's are great tires also. If money is a major factor go with the Duro's. If not get the Big Horns. | | | | Dec 7th, 07, 12:38 PM | | Trail Junkie Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Scott Depot, West Virginia

| Ditto that. Great tire/wheel combo. When you go out on that bad boy just remember - 'Unless you are the lead dog, the view is always the same'. | | | | Jan 10th, 08, 11:08 AM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: Crossville,TN

| I think I am leaning toward the Big Horns, but I won't make up my mind until I get enough wear on my stock tires that they need replacing ( probably this summer ). I would like to get updates from wvyankee2 and bootlegger when you know enough about the performance of your new tires to report on them. Thanks for the pics | | | | Jan 11th, 08, 07:13 AM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: Crossville,TN

| 100 miles on the Duro's. I'm brand new to the sidexside ride, but can tell you they are 10X better than the stock tires. They bite great, handle great, and are super smooth. I can say I'm very happy. I can tell you that these are WIDE. A full 10" on the 25/10/12. I ordered a new set of 8" for the front because I was throwing so much mud with the 10" sticking out past my wheel well. I now have a extra set of 25/10/12's for the rear. The Duro's only come in 25", so if you want to go bigger it has to be the Bighorns. Another reason I got the Duro's are the tire is a true 25", and I heard the Bighorn 25 was actually measured at 26", and were therefor more heavy. I wanted to keep a 25 so not to lose any power. They seem like a great tire, and the proof is that Rocky Mtn. ATV cant keep them in stock. I'd say the main differences between the Bighorn and these are that the Bighorns tend to be taller, and these tend to be wider when comparing both in the same size. And the Bighorns are about $20.00 more per tire. | | | | Jan 11th, 08, 05:31 PM | | Trail Junkie Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Scott Depot, West Virginia

| I just read an article where the Duro got the highest rating among seven tires tested, including the Bighorns. But nothing in the article compared the actual measurements of the 25" tires. I can save 17 lbs on a set of Duros instead of Bighorns. That is good, because it looks like I will be very limited on my choice of wheels for my Grizzly 450. | | | | Jan 21st, 08, 09:24 AM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: Crossville,TN

I have Bighorns and Love them. But honestly teh Duro's are just as good no matter what anyone say. ONly thing is you probaly won't get the same mileage. but it will be close. i have seen alot of bighorns with 5,000 to 6,000 miles on them. | | | | Jan 21st, 08, 03:42 PM | | Trail Junkie Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Scott Depot, West Virginia

| Here's a good look at the Duros and the Bighorns. As you can see in the pic, the Bighorns in the first pic have a much more rounded sidewall, where the Duros in the 2nd pic are much more square edged like a truck tire. Thats why their wider and the Bighorns are taller. The Duros also have more tread lugs. Note the distance between the lugs on the Bighorn and the Duro. with all these things considered, the Duros should have a larger contact patch with the ground. | | | | Apr 18th, 08, 12:40 AM | | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2007

| Hey WVYankee,
How are those Power Grips holding up? Is treadwear good? I am finally about to order them. I am going to buy the dad gum ITP C-series Type 7 rims unless I can find a dealer who sells Power Grips with the Type 4 rims. At least these have a 5+2 offset, which widens the center of my track by 2", which combined with a little shock adjustment, will be all I want. I can't make up my mind between machined or black powder coat. I don't know which would shed mud better. Anybody have an opinion on that? | | | | Apr 19th, 08, 10:15 PM | | Trail Junkie Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Scott Depot, West Virginia

| About 500 miles on them now. I am completely satisfied. All pro's and no cons as far as I'm concerned. Bighorns will wear better, where you may get 3500 miles out of Bighorns, I'd say that you'll get 2800-3000 out of these. The Duro Rubber is softer. They ride and hook up great though. | | | | Apr 20th, 08, 08:50 AM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: Crossville,TN

| YOu can get around 4500 to 5000 miles out of the Bighorns. I have seen about 5 or 6 sets get that many with no problem. | | | | Apr 21st, 08, 06:34 PM | | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2007

| Thanks, fellas. I have weighed all the pro and con and if I needed 4500 miles out of a tire, I would surely get the Bighorns. I doubt that I will put on 4500 miles in the next ten years, so a tire that gets 3000 miles should be just fine for me. I will be purchasing my new Duro Power Grips in May because my wife says I have to go to Boise, ID for my nephew's dad gum wedding first. Oh well, I got her to drive an ATV and she had a big time, so I am making some headway on that front. LOL. I appreciate all the input. You guys really helped me with my decision. I just know these trail tires will be what I am looking for. By the way Bootlegger, my son lives in Huntsville, AL. How far is that from Crossville, TN? | | | | Apr 21st, 08, 11:03 PM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: Crossville,TN
