i have a 1985 HONDA TRX250 4trax, its a 2x4 utility not the sport type. well its coming close to time to buy her some new rear shoes.
the front tires look fine however the rear tires look like balloons as if i was gonna try and float it, measurements are 25x12x9. im not real sure what these 3 #s mean so im curious what #s i need to change in order to get a more normal looking tire and if this is a simple enough fix to my problem?
so is it just a matter of messing with the height # (25) or should i play around with the width # slightley as well to get a more perportioned look/feel
tattoo2303, I know what you mean about the tires looking like balloons. My brother had a 300 Foretrax 2wd and the tires looked huge on the back. That 9 inch rim is the reason. It take more rubber to get to that 25" height. So, if you buy and even taller tire, it will look even bigger. You probably wont find too many tires that sell anything much bigger than 25 or 26 for a 9" rim. (i'm guessing) When you have a 12" rim, it makes the tires look a bit more lower profile. Kinda like these folks that have 22's or higher inch wheels on the cars and it looks like the tire is only 2" thick.
Anyway, about the only thing you can do to get that to not look so fat or balloon like, would be to by a 12" rim. I did the same thing on my 2000 350 Rancher. Also, tires for rims that are smaller tham 12" seemes to run a little more expensive... I guess because manufacturers dont produce as many of them. Just a guess. I'll tell ya what I did. I bought a set (front/rear) of Rubicon aluminum rims for my rancher. I did this to try and counter balance the tire/rim weight. Add heavier tires and loose a little off the rim. With big wheel kits selling so good at our local Honda shop, I bought some stock pull-offs they had sitting around cheap... $35 each rim and mounting. They are normally about $50 or more and then you pay extra for mounting. You may can find some cheaper... who knows.
hows the bolt hole relate, i mean i know on cars they are kinda specific and than they sell semi universal rims for cars as well, what im asking is has honda kinda stuck with the same bolt spacing and everything or will i have to do a trial and error method of finding a rim that will bolt up to my hubs?
factory the front is only a 21" (21x7x10) and the front is a 25x12x9 i was thinking of trying to run 22x11x9s on the rims i have so i wouldnt have to try and find a pair
it really depends on your riding style, if ground clearance is not an issue (like if you ride dirt trails with little or no mudholes, ruts, ditches, logs, and stumps you'll be fine.) on my timberwolf smaller tires on the front don't hurt it because the bigger tires on the rear will push them, but with smaller rears it got stuck more.
