OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A state House committee passed legislation today that would require anyone under age 18 to wear helmets while riding all terrain vehicles.

The Health and Human Services Committee voted 21-to-1 to send the Senate-passed bill to the state House floor.

Supporters of the measure say it will reduce injuries and save lives.

Author of the bill Representative Bill Nations says 11 Oklahomans died in ATV accidents last year and none were wearing helmets.

The bill would also prohibit riders under the age of 14 from carrying passengers unless the ATV was specifically designed for it. ATVs used for agricultural purposes would be exempt.

A very good idea... I just hope they don't get crazy and try to make it mandatory for adults to wear em...

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for safety.... but on large utility quads in the hot summer heat of the lower states the low average riding speed could actually be more harmful. (heat strokes/exhaustion)

I also wonder if this applies only to individuals riding on state-run ORV facilities... or would it include private land as well?

Any time they pass legislation such as this it should be highly publicized and anybody known to own an ATV should be sent information outlining these new laws. (They don't because issuing citations creates revenue, and if nobody knows of the law... then they surely don't know they're breaking it)
