| Took the Brute riding this past weekend and ran into a rather interesting and perplexing problem which I thought other snorkeled-quad owners would benefit from hearing about.
When I pull my bikes down the road (there are usually between 3 and 6 of them on the trailer) I tie them down extremely securely (minimum 4 straps per bike).... With that said, I drive like a freakin maniac to get where I'm going (70-90 miles per hour).
Until this last trip that didn't pose any problem, when I arrived at the park Thursday evening the Brute wouldnt start! The machine acted as though it was hydro-locked and wouldn't turn over at all. After giving it a few moments to settle, it finally cranked and gave me no further problems the rest of the time we were there. Upon returning home, taking it off the trailer... IT DID IT AGAIN!!! I was PISSED!
When it finally did crank this time it smoked like a BEAST.... and didn't stop for some time. A good buddy of mine (Scribner, who also has a snorked brute) informed me this was a problem he too had experienced.
The snorkel (sticking up in the air as it does) will take in air while flying down the road at a rate that exceeds reason. This will in turn flood the carb, and therefore the front cylinder and cause a sort of "reversed vapor lock" which will not allow the engine to start.
A simple solution to this is to break into the fuel line between the tank and the front carb and put in a fuel shut-off valve.... or, install a clean-out plug into the snorkel that can be un-screwed by hand before and after trailering the machine. (or a rubber plug/rag stuffed up into it) will probably do as well.
I hope this helps others avoid the CRAP I went through this weekend with this.... If you have any further questions please holla at me or Scrib.
Ride Safe,

| Probably a good idea to cover the holes in transportation or any time, just to keep odd things from landing in there. Just imagine a piece of plastic or something slipping into that hole while driving. Yo coudl spend days trying to find and fix that bogging down problem.
Good topic for all ATV'ers | | | | Apr 20th, 06, 09:12 PM | | Beer Wagon Driver STAFF Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: DFW, Tx.

| Havn't tried it yet... but I think I'm going to opt for the glue-in 2" threaded clean-out fitting on the snork itself... that way i can just unthread it by hand each time and throw it in the toolbox. Will give an update next time i trailer the bike. | | | | Apr 20th, 06, 11:09 PM | | bead thrower Join Date: Jan 2006

| Brute actually has a fuel cut-off... believe it or not.
It's not designed for daily use... you have to remove the igniter under the seat and use a screwdriver, but there is one.
Not exactly what i'd call a convenient device... but it exists. | | | | Apr 21st, 06, 10:59 PM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Florida

| Or, you could put a piece of freakin duct tape over the snorkel. Problem solved, cheaper and easier and installing cov's and drain plugs and all that crap. Mabye I'm just over simplifying the problem? | | | | Apr 23rd, 06, 12:16 AM | | Hi! STAFF Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Lower Arkansas

Mabye I'm just over simplifying the problem? Can look at it in two ways. You can use the screw in plugs over and over which should be cheaper in the long run.
In Cranes situation, much like mine, every trip to go ride is over 100 miles on a trailer. | | | | Apr 23rd, 06, 12:21 AM | | Almighty Supercook Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: Key West

In Cranes situation, much like mine, every trip to go ride is over 100 miles on a trailer. Until you loose the plug, strip it out (to much beer) or even worse, forget to put it back in. Then you're screwed. | | | | Apr 23rd, 06, 12:50 AM | | Hi! STAFF Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Lower Arkansas

| LMAO... duct tape would work in a pinch i'm sure.
For that matter just shoving a rag up in it would too.
I may just go get a rubber clamp-on cap and forget the rest. | | | | Apr 23rd, 06, 03:23 PM | | Almighty Supercook Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: Key West

I may just go get a rubber clamp-on cap and forget the rest. Even better. Remember, the more simple it is, the less that can go wrong at the worst time possible. | | | | Apr 23rd, 06, 04:45 PM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Florida
