Saw a young couple riding atv's across the ice a few winters ago. Not a good idea. The guy rode across first to test the ice, then his girlfriend followed after he made it across. Unfortunately she wasn't so lucky. She followed in his path and fell through the ice in about five feet of water. My buddy and I managed to throw her a tow rope and winch her out of the water. It took us about five minutes to get her out of the water but by that time she was turning purple and gasping for breath. Her idiot boy friend could not get back to her because of broken and thin ice. We called paramedics but they could not get to us in the wooded location we were in. Fortunately, we had extra winter clothing with us. We got her out of her wet clothes, zipped her up in a insulated jumpsuit and hooded parka. Our truck was parked about three miles away. We got her there as quickly as we could and drove her to where the EMT's were waiting.
This was a case of them having more luck than brains. Fortunately they survived. We never saw them again. Her boyfriend still hadn't arrived when the EMT's took her to the hospital.
Hopefully there's no one on this site that would take this kind of risk. We never found out their names. We just called them dumb...and dumber.

Found it. Here's the story.

Last winter, I went deer hunting with a buddy of mine at a place called Saltry. The trail is about 20 miles and near the middle of the trail, the mountains get closer together, the elevation goes up a little and it's where alot of snow collects should it get windy. (now we know this)
On our way back, with our deer strapped to our bikes, it started to get windy. (we checked the weather the night before, was supposed to be nice) We get to the end of that pass, the wind was blowing around 50mph and up, and the snow had blown off the mountains, and dumped into that pass. That snow was around 3' deep, totally unpassable. We turned around to look for the other group of guys that we'd seen earlier that day. We met up with them and headed to a empty cabin to hole up for the night. Our wifes, all 5 of them, called the Coast Guard that night. It was blowing so badly, they couldn't even launch a helocopter. (you'd be suprised what those things can actually fly in) After a long cold night (wasn't very much firewood around) we got up, made some coffee and got ready. Couple hours later, the helocopter showed up and picked us all up. We had to leave our deer behind, but got to bring the rest of our stuff. When we landed, we saw 5 wifes, not looking very happy. Mine, was suffering from emotion overload. She was ranging from very pissed off, to the height of happiness, all at the same time. I wasn't sure weather she was going to hug me to death, or beat me with my own gun while screaming how happy she was I was back. Mine, and my buddy's wife stayed up all night at my house, called my parents and generally went insane. About 3 weeks later, on our 2nd try, we were finally able to get back out to the cabin and get our bikes. The deer, we had to leave behind. Weren't good anymore. We were really suprised no bear came along for the easy meal.
Well, at least it'll make for a good story for the kids. Alot of embelleshment of course.

Good thing you guys had shelter! Even with taking the best precautions, Murphy's law still comes to play. It's always wise to expect the unexpected.
