Tofield-area man brought up on charges after wielding gun

A 60-year-old man is facing charges after he threatened to bring a gun to his neighbours’ house to “settle a dispute” over noise, prompting a three-hour police standoff.

RCMP were called to a house 10 km from Tofield, southeast of Edmonton, around 10:30 p.m. last Wednesday with reports that someone had been assaulted.

Police say a dispute between two neighbours over loud music and a running ATV turned into a physical fight.

The two people fighting were separated by someone at the scene while police were en route.

Shortly after, a man left the house announcing he was going home to retrieve his gun and “settle the dispute himself,” police said in a release.

A caller quickly phoned police again, tipping them off that the man might return with a weapon.

Police, including the Edmonton RCMP emergency response team, rushed to the suspect’s house around 11:30 p.m., launching a stand off.

At one point, the man fired several shots, but no one was hurt.

Police still aren’t sure whether they were being targeted.

“We know we heard shots,” said Sgt. Jim Warren with Tofield RCMP. “I’m still alive. I don’t have any holes in me. We have no idea what he was shooting at or whether he had any idea we were there. I’m pretty sure he knew we were in the general vicinity.”

Police staked out the property for another three hours before the suspect finally came out of the house around 2:45 a.m. Thursday and was arrested.

Officers found a loaded firearm near the man, along with ammunition for the firearm, when he was arrested.

A 60-year-old man from the Tofield area is facing several firearm and driving-related charges.

OK, I'm just asking... Did they try ringing the door bell? Sounds to me like the guy might have talked some crap, gone home and ran a few rounds through his Glock to let off steam. He didn't return with a gun. What's the problem? LOL

Sounds like just another example of the criminals having all the rights.

Old man probly just wanted some peace and quiet, figured he'd play a convincing bluff by threatening violence...

And he ends up the victim.

How many times have you read read the person did come back and it was'nt a bluff? Just keep your mouth shut and call the POPO first.
