New ATV trail opens in Hualapais
KINGMAN - Those who enjoy life outdoors with off-road vehicles have a new place to play. The Mohave County Parks Department will be holding the grand opening of a new off-road vehicle trail in the Hualapai Mountains at 2 p.m. on Monday.
Parks Director Shawn Blackburn said the trail has been open but was only passable for more experienced riders.
"Now it is finished and usable for anyone," he said.
In the past, the department has banned ATVs from the park but has now changed that policy.
"We are now welcoming off-roaders. Anyone who wants to ride ATVs, dirt bikes or four-wheel drive vehicles in the Hualapai Mountains now have a place to do just that, and it won't cost them an extra dime," Blackburn said.
The standard fee for day-use at the park is $5 per car.
The Kingman Chamber of Commerce will also be celebrating the opening of the trail during its annual ATV Jamboree April 12-15.
The county finished working on the trail about two weeks ago. They started working on improving the trail in 2002 with funds from an Off Highway Vehicle Fund grant from the Arizona State Parks Department.
The Bureau of Land Management and private property owners also helped to improve the trail by granting rights of way and public easements.
Blackburn also said that staff from the Hualapai Park, the county's Road Division and members of the Cerbat Ridge Runner ATV Club helped to clean up the area and build the trail.
The county got help from the Arizona State Parks Department and Arizona Game and Fish.
The county has used funds from the grant to help build a new 2,000-square-foot visitors' center that opened last year. The county also added 10 new campsites for a total of 95 sites to the park, and there are plans to add a new cabin. There are currently 16 cabins. The fee to camp overnight in the park is $12. Cabin rates depend on the size of the cabin.
