Had to go back over the other posts and see it the same person was having both shifting problems and losing oil. Now that I know, I have to wonder if the two problems are not related.
I took my wife's 07' 420 Rancher to the dealer under extended warranty for both these complaints. The said they could not duplicate the shifter problem and they couldn't find anything wrong to be causing it to use oil. All they did was change the oil and pack the connector to the shifter motor with dielectric grease.
Shortly after getting it back, the Rancher started throwing the codes for the angle sensor (before we typically just got the flashing "-"). I took it back, the computer listed the angle sensor as the possible problem, it tested bad and they swapped it out.
Since having the oil changed, it has not used any oil and since having the sensor changed out it hasn't had any shifting problems. In fact, it shifts smoother. But, we haven't put much time on it since and now because of your issue, I'm wondering if the two aren't related some how... Then again, maybe it's cause they're both RED! LOL
I'm going to try and get it out this weekend and run the crap out of it. I'll keep tabs on it and let you know the results of whether or not any of these issues repeat. |

| I agree. I've seen this on many of the ES systems. Could be a battery problem. Seen that once on an 05 Rancher. But, the most common problem is the Angle sensor. (Mine has started doing this when it is raining/snowing, but doesn't any other time. I need to seal it up a bit on the connectors I think) |

| We drove the rancher Sunday some and didn't have any trouble with the shifting at all... let me tell you it got VERY frustrating when it started doing that... the funny thing was when it first started we had just had a "lesson" in how to manually shift the silly thing... I don't think it's the color... I love my little RED honda!!! Shifting is MUCH smoother now... Hope you get it fixed soon!! |

| We took the Rancher to Fourche Mtn during Memorial Weekend and ran the crap out of it, deep water crossings, rain and all, and it performed flawlessly. Absolutely no shifting problems so far. It would appear the angle sensor did the trick. |
