Your problem with it sputtering is the air intake. The steam from the engine gets sucked up into it and it will do excactly what you are talking about.I also bought the Highlifter radiator for my overheating problems and it solved it.The only way to solve the sputtering is to snorkel it.Bayou Snorkels has a kit for your bike I know

My Grizz did the same things.

I did the HL radiator kit... which helped alot with the overheating... but the spitting and sputtering mine was doing stopped cold when I put dielectric grease on the spark plug.... it was grounding out in deep water/mud.

Just pull the cap on the spark plug.. fill it to the brim with dielectric grease, and press it back down on (some will squirt out.. leave it be)

Snorkeling the intake is also a very good idea... Yamaha definetely screwed up on that design... that's not NEARLY enough intake for that size motor, and in a PISS POOR location.

Heat fighter kits are available for ATV's as well.

Hope this helps,

Ride Safe,

Chuck

Another thing.....make sure you clean out the radiator each time (no pressure washer as you could bend and damage the fins). Clean your radiator front and rear. Don't forget to clean behind the inside covers..... take your hose and let it run throughout to make sure all mud is removed.

hi my 2005 grizzly 660 overheats as well don't know what causes that but the sputtering problem is fermiliar also. what is causing that on mine is the exaust is too close to the carb with not enough heat sheild and the gass is acually boiling in the carb. my bro's 05 660 was having the same problem but worse it was making the gas boil in the carb and in the tank as well. we took our exaust off removed the heat sheilds and wrapet them with header wrap, then put the heat sheilds back on and we have not had the sputtering problem since. but keep in mind you have to wrap the exaust all the way to the mufler not just the header...
