| Polaris Sportsman Electrical issues-Follow up I think I've found my electrical problem. I posted here a few days ago about a crazy intermittent electrical issue with my speedo, lights, accessories, etc. I found a post on Google from another rider. He has a similar issue and said to check the circuit breakers under the front panel. Well low and behold, lookie what I found!!! The first one is spotless and clean, but the second one...... There's your sign!!! hopefully the pics attach ok | | | | Mar 23rd, 07, 08:07 PM | | Hi! STAFF Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Lower Arkansas

| Definitely doesn't look good. Did that take care of the problem, or you waiting to replace and test still? | | | | Mar 23rd, 07, 09:47 PM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Florida

| If that wasnt the problem then that damn sure would have caused another down the road. | | | | Mar 23rd, 07, 11:12 PM | | Dodgeboy Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: New York

yes, It definitley took care of the problem. My local Polaris dealer didn't have a circuit breaker in stock so I bought one at NAPA auto parts. I haven't had an issue since, and it was happening every 10 minutes (or less) before!! All fixed for under $10. I added a little dielectric grease this time to help avoid this again. | | | | Mar 24th, 07, 10:03 AM | | Mudpuddlin' Darlin' STAFF Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: AR

| Glad you got it fixed. Now you can fully enjoy the bike
And to think it only cost less than $10 to fix....you definitely can't beat that!
Easy on the wallet is always the best fix you can hope for | | | | Mar 25th, 07, 08:11 PM | | Beer Wagon Driver STAFF Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: DFW, Tx.

Definetely wouldn't have been that cheap if you got the parts from the dealer!
Dielectric Grease is a VERY good idea... I keep a can of it around all the time.
(coincidentally, most O'Reilly auto parts stores sell it in a pressurized can with a pull-trigger type nozzle which makes it MUCH easier to work with. )
Glad ya got it fixed!

| I am MISTAKEN!!! WRONG!!! DISAPPOINTED!!!
So, I thought it was fixed!! Wrong. I took my machine to camp with some friends, I rode all day with out so much as one problem. Getting ready to leave camp that evening it stalls a couple times. I thought it was just from being cold. I get it started, and the speedo needled starts raising up to about 25-30 mph by itself with out the machine moving. Starts going up and down erratically. I put it in reverse to back up and it starts to stall. Speedo still acting up. The speedo display never goes out like previous, but the speedo is going crazy by itself. I am at a loss, I guess it's going to end up at the dealer after all. I just hope he can work it in between the motorcycles and sleds and mowers, chainsaws, and.......you get my drift! I'm disgusted!!! | | | | Mar 26th, 07, 05:05 PM | | Beer Wagon Driver STAFF Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: DFW, Tx.

| Suggestion... put the old parts back on it.
Dealers (some of them anyways) can be pricks, and say that the part you put on it caused the damage.
Just a sugg... good luck man

| It was just one circuit breaker that I changed. there are two more, but they looked good. Besides, the machine is not under any warranty anymore so the dealer will be more than happy to take my money. I shouldn't complain too much, I run a service dept. for a Chrysler-Dodge dealership, I'm not much different than the Polaris guys!! Quote:

| Well that sucks,I still think it is going to be electrical but sometimes trying to pinpoint an electrical problem is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack. | | | | Mar 26th, 07, 08:41 PM | | Beer Wagon Driver STAFF Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: DFW, Tx.

| LOL, sorry man... it looked so new in your avatar I assumed it was still under warranty and you'd just rather repair it yourself. (I've done that to avoid missing out on riding)
I'm with Scrib though, it's got to be electrical.
I hope it's something simple and not alot of $.
Good luck,

| I've been all over this forum, and a few others on the internet and from what I'm reading, I "might" have a wheel speed sensor issue. I've seen a few riders with similar issues talk about an erratic speedo needle and then a speed sensor. I think the corroded circuit breaker I found solved the problem with the speedo pod going blank and the no start issue, that hasn't reappeared "YET" I'm just a little leary of the dealers around here, they all sell so many other pieces of equipment that I'm not sure how good or accurate the diagnosis of this might be. I appreciate all the ideas you guys are giving me, I've consider trading the machine if the repair is too expensive, but I don't want to stick anyone with a defective machine. Granted, the machine is a 2003, but it only has 1000 miles on it. I don't consider that high, so I'd love to find the problem!! | | | | Mar 27th, 07, 12:02 PM | | Hi! | Have you checked to see how expensive the speed sensor is? I could see that being the cause of the speedo going crazy, but in the back of my mind, I just feel that ultimately there is a wire grounding out to bare metal somewhere.
As a tech, I always hated electrical problems. | | | | Apr 3rd, 07, 12:31 PM | | Dodgeboy Join Date: Mar 2007 Location: New York

| Fixed!! I hope Well guys and ladies! If you have been reading my post on the electrical issue, I really, really think I finally have it fixed!! It turns out that I had two electrical issues that both affected the speedo. In the earlier post I showed pictures of the corroded circuit breaker. That fix took care of the speedo display going blank and the machine not restarting. The second issue was the speedo needle going crazy whether the machine was on or not. Well, doing research on the net I found that the speed sensor, or hall sensor, as Polaris calls it was bad. I tested mine Friday and found that it would make the speedo needle move just by moving it around the front brake rotor. I replaced it with a new sensor Saturday and went to camp Saturday afternoon. I logged 94 miles of trail riding this weekend and it hasn't so much as hiccuppped. I know I said it before, but I really think I have it this time!! Thanks for all your suggestions, this is a great forum
p.s.
I have a 2005 Polaris Phoenix 200 with a hard start problem that I'm working on now, any help with that would be great too!! I won't even get into the Predator 90 issues this week!! | | | | Apr 3rd, 07, 12:47 PM | | Hi! STAFF Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Lower Arkansas

| I didn't think it was very expensive. The speed sensor was $58 with tax, so between the two repairs I was still under $75 total. It's running great, and much cheaper than having the dealer try to figure it out. But of course while I was at the dealership I bought a new winch cable, and some oil, then I started looking at new machines.......!!! | | | | Apr 3rd, 07, 11:18 PM | | Hi!
