North/South Honda carb difference

New to this forum, I have used the search already.

1999 Honda Foreman ES(1200 mi) purchased in Canada new
2000 Honda Foreman manual shift(400 mi) purchased in Va. 2006

Is there a difference in the carburetion between these two bikes? These are my brothers bikes and last fall during moose hunting created some questions. I am looking for some info as I am in the market for a new bike and this will influence where I purchase.
As far as I know both bikes are identicle except the electric and manual shift capabilities.
Both bikes are in top shape and have been taken care of. The ES performed flawless as usual last fall. The manual also performed extremely well with one exception. This bike had to be warmed up for at least 5 minutes before we could use it(it would spitter, sput and stall). This isn`t a big deal to me as I believe in warming them up anyway, but fuel consumption was way off compared to the ES. I also realize that warming them up uses extra gas. Generally both bikes were started at the same time each day and there wouldn`t be 5 miles difference in mileage for the 9 days.
Basically what I`m saying is that both bikes had almost identicle usage for the 9 days but the manual used a lot more gas.
As I said, both bikes are in top shape and run like tops !!! I have small engine experience but not with atv. I can see nothing wrong with the bike at all.

Since I am in the market for a new one, I am considering purchasing in the US but need to know if the carb needs work for the colder climate. If there is a difference - then we can have the carb done on my brothers manual shift to improve performance.

Thanks for any and all info

It's all in the jetting. (The replaceable nozzle inside the carburetor through which the fuel enters the carb)

Depending on the altitude you fellas were at (moose hunting, I'm guessing y'all were way up there), you have to rejet based on the elevation in which you'll be operating.

Since your ES was purchased in Canada, it was likely already jetted for higher altitudes, the manual however purchased in Virginia would be jetted for lower altitudes.

As you inidicated, they will run.. but not to peak performance. It won't hurt the machine, it just won't be as fun or as efficient.

Jet kits are available online from several after-market manufacturers, or from your local Honda dealer. Just determine what altitude you'll be riding at, then use that information to purchase the jet that's right for your needs.

Your dealer can also perform this service for you, not sure what they would charge.... but if you are not familiar with carbs... I recommend it. (lots of little pieces that can fall out and wreak havoc)

Hope this helps.

Yes Crane is right, bikes that are to be sent in the states have a diff jetting than the ones you will get up there. The carbs are identical except for the jetting. The ones you will have will have a slightly smaller jetting than the ones in the states. There is even a diff from northern US to the southern US.
