| Polaris explorer 400 running backwards !! I have a strange problem, just took it out the other day was running fine for 10 minutes, then she started to backfire and run rough, I put her in gear to drive it in the garage and it wanted to go in reverse. I am stumped, why would it want to run in reverse when it is shifted in foreward. | | | | May 28th, 07, 08:20 PM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Florida

| Is this the 2 stroke 400 explorer? If it is,I have seen 2 strokes backfire before and then they will run backwards. They shut them off then crunk it back up and took off like nothing happened.
A friend of mine that raced banshees with me had one that would do that.I actually won some money oneday cause of that.I bet some boys that my freinds banshee had reverse and they didnt believe me. | | | | May 29th, 07, 11:25 PM | | Junior Member Join Date: May 2007

| Yep its a 2 stroke, 1995 and it has seen it's days, won't go back to running right. Anyone have any clues Do it have anything to do with the shifter? I see a wire harness coming from there. | | | | May 30th, 07, 03:07 PM | | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2006 Location: Royse City, Texas

| I have a buddy that has a explorer 400 that had the same problem I will give a call and see what he did to fix it.
But anyways I am not a big polaris fan but that 2 stroke 400 polaris will run like nothing that I have ever seen. I have seen his bone stock 400 out run these new big bore machines. | | | | May 30th, 07, 05:27 PM | | Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Minnesota

| It is common for older two strokes to start running backwards, I had a opposing two stroke snowmobile do that, darn near tore my arm off when it fired and pulled the recoil back. The understanding in my humble opinion is that the timing is off, pistons go up and down no matter the direction of the crank (look at the reverse on a ski-doo, it is just changing the timing) Neet trick if it is intentional. Check all the grounds and ignition box. I can see where the phase is off due to wear, it will alter the timing making it run backwards. Too bad there isn't timing marks, that would be an easier fix
good luck,

| Did anyone find out about my backwards running problem?
I started it up and it only idles and backfires, runs really bad, it seems to have good compression when I pull start itl If I can't get her running I'll offer it for sale cheap, just taking up too much room . | | | | Jun 6th, 07, 07:24 PM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Florida

| If it is doing consintently, check your key way on your flywheel. It could have sheered off when it backfired and broke it | | | | Jun 7th, 07, 07:59 AM | | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: New Jersey

| Check the ignition module. The timing is to far advanced. I had this happen on a chain saw. | | | | |
