im a new member and i dont have a quad . but im thinking about getting one and dont know what i need. i want an automatic transmission for sure, and id like it to be a sport atv(like a 660 raptor) for the look and it cant be huge either..... so is it better to have 2wd or 4wd someone told me you didnt need to have 4wd so i dont know what to think? and lastly do they even make 4wd in a sport atv with an automatic transmission, i havent seen anything except for 2wd in a 5 speed, suppossedly thats for racing? so any suggestions would be great and ill probably be back with more questions.... ya

Well i dont know much about atv's but i know that the polaris scrambler is a sport 4wd auto and it is a 500 so its not to weak. thats going to be my next atv right now i have a trailboss 330 2wd not bad at all either.
very hilly, challenging trails, drop offs, and river crossing, and lots of mud. idk i just really like the look of a sport, but idk if a clutch is a good idea for me.
I ride my honda 400ex everywhere....if youre going to ride it through SERIOUS mud just make sure you have good tires and some buddies to pull you out if (And WHEN) you get stuck. Also SKID PLATES! if your going to be riding on any kind of terrain that isnt flat and smooth your going to want good skid plates.
i was thinkink a 400 would be good enough for me, but would be willing for it to be bigger. i just dont want it to be huge that ill be to scared to ride the thing. and the deal with the clutch is i think it might take away from the driving experience. b/c ill be trying to figure out what gear i need to be in for everything, instead of being able to ride where ever i want with out thinking about it
There are tw0 types of automatics, 5 speed semi and full auto. If you don't want to clutch these are your only choices. In the 5 sp unit you shift manually as needed with engine rpm range, full auto just put it in D and go. I believe that in almost all sport quads there is clutching involved. Judging from what you are sayin though, it sounds like you would be better off with a sport/utility model. When you start getting into the bush, mud hills muskeg, you will be spendin 90 % of your riding time just tryin to get 'unstuck' with a sport machine. Yeah they look cool but not meant for the bush. Yamaha makes a nice unit for sporty mudding. Up hear in Canada it is called a KODIAK, but I think in U.S. it will be called the grizzly 450. It is not too big, still slightlly lower in weight, good independent suspension, comfortable and comes in automatic. Not to mention you can put a winch on, and you will need it when you get into mud. Do some research and scan the internet looking at different models. Good luck. Cheers.
yeah...the Can Am renegade will knock your socks off. Its an awsome bike and has the looks of a sport quad with the off road performance of a utility quad. I dunno how big you are but my guess is that if your not somewhat rugged than you may want to test it first to make sure you can control it
For what its worth I've had a Grizzly 600 for years and wanted somthing a little more sporty but a warrior or raptor or 300 ex / 400 ex just doesn't fit the terrain I ride. So I stayed with a 4x4 The Wolverine. So far I have only one complaint...It does't wheelie easily. Guess its the heavy 4x4 stuff but for an inexperienced rider who doesn't wan't to think about changing gears its hard to beat. it has geat acceleration, flat Tracks well turn great in the technical stuff goes of logs with eas climbs like a antelope has great brakes water cooled goes down hill great (engine Braking) Has good ballance. I regard myself as a pretty good rider and i'm happy with the performance. My brother has a Raptor and it has great power but it can get away from you quick. with the 450 you have alot more fun riding and enjoying the outdoors without concentrating on the technical part of operating the bike.
i have a stock suzuki ozark and it doesnt have a cltch but you still have to shift it is 2wd and pretty quick it is a sport utility and it does really well climbing hills and it does good in mud I would look at them because they are only like 3000 dollars compared to some of the others that will do the same thing that is just my opinion though and if money is no issue i would go with the suzuki king quad 700 it isnot going to be as sporty but it will do well in the terrain you listed and it would be easy to mod
Do yourself a favor and get a good utility quad. Trust me there are times you'll be REALLY glad you have the four wheel drive. I've got an '07 Honda Rancher AT 400, great throttle response and a fully automatic tranny if you want it, if not you flip the ESP (electronic Shift Program) switch to ESP and you have a semi-manual shift transmission, the shifter is two buttons on the left one for up and one for down. Comes in handy for steep inclines. Go ride one I think you will be surprised.
forget about fourwheel drive dont waste a couple thousand dollars for that just go to home depot and get a tow rope for like 15 bucks that is if you ride with other people
