So I went out on a ride yesterday, a long gruesome ride through some washed out creek beds etc.
After a few hours of riding My Brute started to act like it was starving for gas, or misfiring on one cylinder.
It would only do it at slow speeds, and if I feathered the throttle it would come out and run fine at wide open.
What exactly are the carb vents that run into the little white canister, I know they are not the drains for the bowls, because there are other hoses on the bottom of the carb for that.
Are they vents for the choke?
I noticed the line from the canister got kinked a little.
I am guessing either the white canister, or I tore a hole in one of the carb boots, and have a massive vacum leak.
I used a 3" rubber 90 I cut in half, and reduced it to 2" PVC.
I went out through the side pocket, instead of doing the (mudinmyblood) design.
I was more concerned with too many bends being restrictive.
I am not sure If I need jetting or not, It does not smoke at all, and I certainly did not loose any power.
Kind of seems to me like I am either starving for fuel, have a plug wire thats falling off, or I guess a vacum leak at the carb boot.
It was kind of stuttering, loosing power, and backfiring like crazy, unless I feathered the throttle a little and then hold it wide open, then it runs fine. Kind of intermittent.
I did notice the vent hose from the little white canister was kinked, I blocked off the hole in the canister and routed the hose into the guage pod.
It could be water in the gas, but them machine only has 15 hours on it, so I am ruling that out.
I heard of some people having problems with the engine brake getting stuck, etc.
If you did the air box you will more than likely need to rejet it. It's almost a given when the air box is done. I bet that will fix your problem cause, that is what it sounds like to me. Is there a Dyno anywhere close to you??? I would try that first before anyting else. cause anytime you change the air flow that much rejetting is a must.
I didnt think it would change the air that much, if anything, its letting more air in than stock.
Maybe I will mess around with a reducer on the end of the snorkel.
It is getting hard to start now, I bet its running super lean.
rejetting sucks, cause ill have to blow another 100 bucks, that I don't have.
Will the carb vents being kinked off cause problems? thats going to be the first thing I check out.
Its still got enough power to wheelie down the pavement, but the low end stutter is a pain, especially when your riding in rugged terrain like washed out logging roads.

The Snorkel will change the air flow alot more tha you think.
Yea, a kinked vent hose is a problem. Got any pics of your snorkels??? I like Pics! LOL! I hope you get it going right again.
I did some research on the vent hoses, aparently they are atmospheric vents to keep the float bowls from getting air locked.
I am better almost 100 percent this is my problem. I took a look at it and the front carb vent line was completely kinked.
There is no way to tell if your running too lean other than your exhaust getting too hot right? I thought it would smoke white if lean, and black if its too rich.
I never washed my machine from Sunday night and all the mud is frozen solid, ill have to clean it up before I work on it.
I am not finished with the snorkels yet, I need to do some cosmetic stuff, and cut holes in my side pocket panels.
I just kinda stuck a 45 fitting on the top so I could test them out before I glue the pieces above the plastics.
I know everyone prefers the center snorkels, but I did it on a budget, so I am proud.
I think it looks interesting, and people always ask why you have 2 on one side and one over there.
As far as center snorkels being better if you tip the machine, I think if your in water that deep and you tip it sideways your screwed with either setup.
Check your spark plug it will tell you everything you need to know. White means your running lean, black means your running rich. What you are wanting is a tan color plug. Go Spark Plugs for pictures of what a plug should look like.
I am going to add a 2 45's to them so they will clear the handlebars, one to take it forward, and another one to bring it back to straight up.
Unless it looks real crap to me, I might redo the whole thing with 2 or 3" spa hose (braided PVC tubing)
I am waiting to see someone else who has done with hose before I try it out.
