adjusting valves on 96 kodiak

has anyone ever done this?? i take the tank off to get to the covers, take them off to have access to adjust the rockers, have to turn the motor to tdc or something, and use feeler gauge to determine correct lash?? am i close?? anyways i just bought it and it has some noise from the upper engine area. i took the cam cover plate off and the chain feels snug and not sloppy. i dont know clearance spec or how to determine the tdc part, any suggestions would be RAD. thanks

there should be a mark on the cam gear and one on the head to line up to get it at TDC, call the dealer about the tolerances. also you might "google" search atv valve lash adjustment and get a rough idea.

if you use a feeler gauge set that has different size bolted together it's easier to take them apart.

well i found out the clearances, .004 int .008 ex. i took the tank off to get access to the covers, took off the covers and adjusted, put it back together, and it still has the noise. im thinking it might be the piston. atleast i learned something new, and i did it in less time than it took my buddy to change his oil in his rancher!!! well now im kind of concerned if it will get worse, and if i should do something now or ride it through the summer and rebuild it this winter.
