| high mounted winch i want to put my winch on the kodiak but alot of the places i like to ride where the oem winch location it would be under water alot. the winch is "water proof" but i like the idea to mount it higher so it might last longer. do ya'll have any thoughts/ suggestions on this? | | | | Apr 3rd, 08, 01:54 AM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: moulton, alabama

| the lower you put them the better they pull. The higher they ore the more down force they will have on your atv. That is what i have been told anyway. | | | | Apr 3rd, 08, 07:02 AM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: moulton, alabama

| when useing a winch you should hook it higher than the winch, so it pulls upward, the only place it would hurt would be in the dunes or if you were alone in an open area. some of the hondas mount on the bumper. | | | | Apr 3rd, 08, 08:01 PM | | Vol Fan Join Date: Dec 2007 Location: Knoxville, TN

| Hey youre Bama youre right it doesnt matter where the winch is mounted on the quad as long as you hook it higher than the winch. Hell its a Yamaha we dont need no stinking winches.LOL Hell if you tie the mount into where your front bumper mounts to the frame that should be plenty strong. If you look at the stock winch mount on the 07 later Big Bears it doesnt look beefy but it seems plenty strong so far.Post some pics when you get it situated Id like to see it.I should have some pics tommorow of some projects I started this week Im taking a vacation day tommorow so I hope to get them done. | | | | Apr 3rd, 08, 10:21 PM | | Super Moderator STAFF Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: moulton, alabama

| Ok,
You want the winch as low on the machine as possible.
There are several reasons for this... strength (mounting to primary frame members and multiple mounting points); center of gravity for pulling (you won't always have your "choice" of anchors.
It does suck to have em down where they can get into the water... but after having to recruit a half-dozen folks to sit on the ass-end of my bike to keep it from coming off the ground while I'm winching out.... taught me to keep the winch as low as possible. | | | | |
