If you have anew bike use conventional oil for breakin.
About first 50 hours or first two oil changes. Than switch to
synthetic oil if thats what you want to do. I am on my second
oil change on my new bike. Next time I will go to synthetic.
I run synthetic in my 2000 Polaris and I thinks it better for
the Engine . Haven't had any engine problem on the Polaris.
So I guess it is better for ware and tear.

not to long ago i put syntheic oil in my 06 Grizzly 660....the stuff actually made a differance...it feels peppyer...heck i spun the wheels on that thing at almost half throttle...only draw back to synthetic oil is the price....i paied 8 bucks a quart for the Mobil 1 racing synthetic oil and it's a 10/40 weight...and if you do make the change you can never go back to regular oil....but in my books if you want to make your ATV last longer and run better...the extra money is worth it.

My ride is a 660 Rhino and I stick with Yamalube in it. I use synthetic in all my cars/trucks. My 88' Toyota Celica has 345k miles on the original motor!
I stay with Yamalube for a couple of reasons. Yamaha requires 20w40 weight oil-something not easily found from other brands. Yamalube is not cheaper than synthetics. oldatvr

Bootlegger- Do you mean Yamaha will change its recommendation to use 20w40 to recommending to now use 10w30? Do you think other oil weights such as 10w30 or 10w40 are ok to use? Mobil one full synthetic is good oil and way cheaper than Yamalube.
Whats' you opinion? oldatvr

ok, i think im gonna switch to synthetic, but ive heard that synthetic oil relieves enough friction that it may make my clutch slip .

is there a certain kind of synthetic i need to use to keep my clutch plates from slipping.?

also does the synthetic oil have to be specifically for atvs or can it be synthetic car oil.

Check out the links at the bottom of this thread and it should help you out but to answer your question you should not use regular car oil in your atv.

YES! VERY USEFUL ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE RIDING HILLS OR RIDING AT ANGLES FOR A EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. IF YOUR RIDING A BIG BORE ENGINE IT WILL ALSO HELP IT RUN ALITTLE COOLER. THE ONLY DOWNSIDE IS ONCE YOU USE IT YOU SHOULD NEVER SWITCH BACK TO NON SYN. OR A NON DETERGENT OIL.

so i dont need to use the synthetic oil that says " energy conserving " on it, because thats what makes a wet clutch slip.

im gonna get some opinions,

if yall had a honda 300ex what brand and weight of synthetic would you use, i want a good quality oil thats gonna protect my motor a little better and give me some power gain

any recomendations?

ROYAL PURPLE MAKES GREAT OIL. IT COSTS AROUND 10 DOLLARS A QUART BUT IT'S WORTH IT IN MY OPINION.

You could probably use Maxima or Amsoil 10W 30 and see positive results from both. Honestly, I don't think you need to be concerned too much with brand as opposed to the weight for the temperatures in your area. This quote should help you decide...

"In most of the country, 10W40 makes a good warm season oil, and 5W30 a good cold season oil. If you are in the hot south, maybe 15W50 in the hot and 10W30 in the cold. In the forzen north, maybe 10W30 in the warm and 0W30 in the cold. Consult your owner's manunal!!!"

I'm still new at all this but these are the things that I've learned about oil so far.

As most yo know I work for Yamaha. 10w-40 is fine to use. I used 20w-50 all year round in my 660 Grizzly cause they run hotter than other motors. The best oil I found to use in my Yamaha was either Valvoline ATV or Motorcycle oil in either 10w-30 or 20w-50. I'm not much on the synthetic oil after talking to the Yamaha mechanics that acutally do the research on them. The best oil filter is Purolator Pure One or Napa Wix. If anyone needs the #'s for them for the Grizzly's let me know and I can post them. This was all told to me a by a head Yamaha Tech.

yea i live in the "hot south" and i run 10W40 all year around, but in the summer my fourwheeler runs a little hot on slow or long rides , and im gonna be doing alot of riding since school just let out for summer vacation. so is 15W50 the next weight up, or is that a little too thick

checking the specs of yamalube or whatever brand of bike and make sure the specs are the same for whatever brand of synthetic. I use Amsoil in everything, after calling them directly and asking for tech support they have guys that know about atvs/ trucks/ outboards, you name it and when I put 5w30 in my diesel truck (very sceptical at first) pulling 28000 lbs total and getting better mileage, that's impressive! 6000 mile filter change, 12000 oil change. Oil analysis every 36000, still going strong!

There are only two suppliers of basic stock to make fully synthetic oil, so is Royal Purple better than Amsoil? depends on who you talk to. Take apart any two identical engines one with syn, the other with dynosaur oil and the syn motor will be so much cleaner and easier to prep for rebuilding. I have seen amsoil find a pin hole in a plate of steel over time, the first thing you can tell is that your bike will idle faster (less friction)

there is really no reason to use dynosaur oil anymore, unless you get leaks that can't be fixed.

Doogie
