I have already melted the plastic on my 7hr, riding time, old Can Am 800. I've read many post about people putting heat tape on the possibly affected areas. This keeps the plastic from melting, but what about my leg? I could send my exhaust out to have it ceramic coated. What about heat wrap? I've used it before for my truck headers. Has anyone ever tried it? Wouldn't it be a more cost effective approach to circumventing the heat issues? I'm just looking for other possibilities that may help cut my riding downtime. Thanks for any input.

A bolt on heat shield for the exhaust might be an alternative to a ceramic wrap or tape...

Not to be a wise-ass or anything... but if the machine is melting it's own plastic after only 7 hours..... I personally would be taking it back to the dealer.

Sounds like a potential recall situation to me.

Yamaha went through this with the Grizzly,
Kawi went through it with the Brute,
Not the first machine to experience over-heating problems.... get it fixed by the MFG before it becomes dangerous in my opinion.

Just a thought.

I'm taking the bike back tomarrow to talk to them. From what I hear, the company's usual fix is to install a couple of heat shields, and some heat tape. That should save the plastic, but I think they should do something more about the situation. My goal is to have THEM ceramic coat the pipes. I don't think I should have to pay for anything for this kind of problem. You are exactly right, this should be a recall. I just wanted to see that if my attempts fail, what are my other choices. By no means did I take you as sounding off. I totally agree. I just spent a chunk of change for something that wants to go Chernobyl on me, and that bites. I'm sure I can get it fixed and be satisfied, but I want to walk away from this happy .

Let us know how it works out with the dealer and what they were willing to do to alleviate the problem...

Hey Chuck, you forgot about the popo 800 were also melting plastics. At least I've read that they were.

ABSOLUTELY! Definately a recall situation... don't let them tell you otherwise.

I wasn't aware of the Polaris 800 situation.... my personal experience is limited to the Grizz and Brute.

The first time I shut down a Grizz and heard the gas boiling between my legs..... I hit the woods.... and wouldn't get near the bike till it was cooled. And then it went straight in for the vented panels and foil insulating pads recall.

The Brute had a glowing header pipe one night right after I got it... and it immediately went in for the carb. recall.


When it comes to losing the family jewels due to spontaneous combustion...... I DON'T TAKE CHANCES.

Yes you can put heat wrap on the exhaust.I have it on my brute,it will make the exhaust rust after a period of time.It will also keep the heat down alot,that is the only way I could deal with riding the bike with shorts on.

What did you find out? Did they fix the problem?

I hope they fixed it for you.....however, another alternative (just in case) is:

I talked to the service manager, and he said brp would not coat the exhaust. He did say they are currently working on a new set of heat shields. It will all be done as a recall. They will go over the bike and fix any thing that has been affected by the excessive heat. The bad news is that they are looking at it being sometime in Nov. before this will all be done. He told me of a couple of self spray on coatings. He has tried one and said he liked it. <$50 He was extremely upfront and helpful. Even if they have a good fix on the way I think I'm gonna go ahead and spray my pipes. Just because I want to.
They also suggested not to use heat wrap. Said I would lose tension in the springs for the exhaust.

I've heard of those heat shields that they're working on but didn't know the time-frame and hadn't seen any recall posted by them yet. I'll keep an eye out for the recall and try to post as soon as I see it. I'm glad they're willing to fix the pieces that were damaged as a result of this "recall".
