Motocross brings out whoops in riders, spectators

By Joan Dittmann Post-Tribune correspondent
Most activities have their ups and downs, but it's the ups, downs, curves and whoops that draw participants and spectators to motocross.
With spring weather comes the opening of outdoor motocross tracks, including a local one that prides itself in being a family-friendly destination: Dirt Motocross Race Park in Kingsbury, about six miles south of LaPorte.
In motocross, specialized motorcycles and ATV quads ride and race on a winding dirt track with varied terrain.
This race park contains two tracks. One is a mile-long pro track, with jumps and a whoop section, with a stretch of low mounds spaced about 10 feet apart. On the double jump, riders jump from one mound to another. Some riders jump from the first to the third mound.
"The ones who do that here are jumping about 90 feet," said Greg Goolsby of Dirt Motocross. "To jump a big distance, a lot of people are surprised that you don't have to go as fast as you'd think. A lot of times, riders are only going about 30 or 40 mph, but the spring-loaded suspension, plus the techniques they use, helps to propel them -- plus lots of practice and experience."
Some riders start getting that experience as early as age 4. That's where Dirt Motocross Race Park's second track comes in. This is a quarter-mile track with miniature versions of the terrain on which young riders learn the sport.
"We have the full spectrum of ages and abilities here -- from beginners to pro riders," Goolsby said. "We try to cater to first-timers and families.
"I built this track with spectators and parents in mind. When my son started and we went to other tracks, spectators could usually only see one point on the track. ... Here, you can see 90 percent of the track from one vantage point."
He suggests spectators bring lawn chairs or blankets. Race days are great to see action, but Goolsby said open-ride days are better for spectators who want to talk to riders and learn about the sport.
The season's first race day will be Sunday, April 8, and will include an Easter egg hunt and children's activities. Open-ride days are Sundays when races are not scheduled.

Dirt Motocross Race Park is east of the intersection of U.S. 35 and U.S. 6, on 3rd Road, off of Hupp Road.
Spectator admission is $8 on race days and $5 on open-ride days.
