What to expect on July 4th, 2007

Reference: Syracuse Sand Park Home

What to expect from the Syracuse Sand Dunes Park on July 4th.

The 4th of July is coming fast and we are all excited about the opening of the park. I expect the park will have a lot of rough edges but all in all it will be a great start to a great park.
  • The Syracuse Chamber of Commerce will be serving Hamburgers & Brats at the Park on July 4th at noon.
  • There will be a Fireworks display at the football field that night. With free ice cream to be served courtesy of the dairies.

Do not count on very many amenities on the 4th of July. This is a “get you in to the sand and get some trails broken” park opening. There will be a Grand Opening in the fall and by then this will be a completely different park with a lot of amenities.

Sand conditions:
There is a lot of grass and weeds on the sand. Please come and help us remove some of it on the 4th of July.

Sage and Sand Area:
It’s wild and unbroken. Please come and help us explore and blaze new trails where no one has ridden before.

The size of the park?
The park will open with 1,300 acres ½ which is mainly sand, the other ½ is sand and sagebrush.

How much parking will be available? And what type?
There will be parking for approximately 300 at the park on the 4th of July and places set up for over flow if needed. The parking lot will be packed dirt.

Will there be camping available, cost and type of sites?
You will be allowed to park your camper but no hook ups will be available on the 4th. Camp sites will be added in the next few months. Cost is not known at this time.

Will the park and campground be patrolled?
Yes by park rangers and local law enforcement.

What facilities will be available at the opening on July 4th?
The showers and restrooms are almost finished but there may be a delay with the sewage system. This could delay the opening of the showers and restrooms by a week or two at the most. But they are working hard to have them open for the forth of July. I will report the progress and keep you updated. There will be 15 or so port-a-potties on site so there will be some place “to go” on the 4th.

What is the cost to enter the park? Will there be an annual pass?
  • The cost will be $5.00 a day. If multiple passengers just the driver will be charged. There will be wrist bands issued. They will be non transferable.
  • Annual passes will be $150.00 for the first family member and $75.00 for each additional. Prorated prices may be available this year.

These prices are subject to change but this will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Park expected to draw ATV riders to Syracuse

The Associated Press
Published Tuesday, June 19, 2007

SYRACUSE — City officials are hoping the creation of an ATV park for vehicles will bring visitors riding into Syracuse.

Community leaders plan to turn about 1,300 acres into an all-terrain vehicle park using the land’s natural resource of sand. They hope the new attraction will draw tourists and increase business for the entire area.

Syracuse is in Hamilton County in southwest Kansas.

The city has started hiring employees, including a park director, for the sand dune park on the its south edge. It is expected to open July 4.

The number of people the park will draw is unknown, but a test run in April showed signs of success. About 150 to 200 riders showed up when organizers allowed riders into the park one Saturday. When not at the park, riders went around town, eating at local restaurants and stopping at gas stations.

The idea for the park is modeled after Little Sahara State Park in Waynoka, Okla., which contains 1,450 acres of sand dunes ranging in height from 25 to 75 feet.
